IRIOSH - An International Initiative for Decent Workplace and Social Justice!
The International Research Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IRIOSH) is a federally incorporated, provincially registered independent, Canadian non‑profit research institute committed to advancing global occupational safety and health through scientific excellence, international collaboration, and evidence‑based policy development. Rooted in the belief that every worker deserves safe, healthy, and dignified employment, IRIOSH aligns its mission with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well‑Being and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. IRIOSH supports SDGs but is not affiliated with the United Nations (UN).
Our logo reflects our identity and purpose:
Global Research for a Safer, Healthier, Sustainable World
IRIOSH conducts interdisciplinary research across key areas including OSH policy and governance, workplace health and injury prevention, safety leadership and organizational culture, decent work and labour standards, and knowledge translation. Our work supports governments, industries, academic institutions, and communities in strengthening OSH systems and improving worker well‑being worldwide.
A core pillar of our mission is equitable access to knowledge. IRIOSH was established to provide a free, credible, and ethical publication platform for researchers — especially those in under‑resourced regions. We proudly offer zero‑fee publishing on our official web portal, with no charges before, during, or after peer review. This commitment ensures that high‑quality OSH research remains accessible, non‑predatory, and globally inclusive.
Through partnerships with universities, research organizations, and international networks, IRIOSH fosters global collaboration and supports the development of safer, healthier, and more sustainable workplaces. Our institute serves as a hub for scientific inquiry, policy innovation, and capacity building — empowering researchers, practitioners, and communities to advance occupational safety and health across borders.
IRIOSH stands as a symbol of integrity, collaboration, and global commitment — working to protect workers, strengthen OSH systems, and contribute to a safer world for all.

Our work aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well‑Being and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
We collaborate with universities, governments, industries, and global organizations to generate evidence‑based insights that improve occupational safety and health (OSH) systems worldwide.
Independent research from our research institute drives global collaboration, producing evidence-based solutions that promote decent work and enhance global health and occupational safety for workers everywhere.

International Disaster Management Collaboration
Knowledge Exchange: Saskatchewan, Canada - Malaysia
In 2026, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) hosted a virtual guest lecture featuring Dr. Arjun Kathayat, Founder of IRIOSH, and Mayor Lucille Dunn, Board-Chairperson. The session brought together Canadian disaster management expertise and Malaysian public health leadership, medical officers, and PhD in Public Health students in Malaysia.

International Disaster Management Collaboration: Audiece
PhD-Public Health students at UPM and officers from Malaysia’s Ministry of Public Health participated in this interactive session.
Purpose
To foster global collaboration in disaster preparedness and equip public health professionals with actionable tools.

International Disaster Management Collaboration: Session Highlights

1. Global OSH Policy & Governance
Comparative studies examining regulatory systems, enforcement models, and policy styles across regions—including North America, Southeast Asia, and emerging economies—are essential for promoting decent work and advancing global health initiatives.
2. Workplace Health & Injury Prevention
Evidence‑based research on hazards, risk management, mental health, and psychosocial safety is crucial for improving occupational safety and protecting workers’ rights.
3. Leadership & Organizational Safety Culture
Studies exploring how leadership behavior influences safety performance, including research from the U.S. oil and gas sector, contribute to the understanding of effective practices that align with the SDGs.
4. Decent Work & Labor Standards
Cross‑regional analysis of OSH inspector ratios, labor protections, and global decent work indicators is vital for fostering safe work environments and ensuring compliance with international standards.
5. Knowledge Translation & Capacity Building
Transforming research into practical tools, policy briefs, and training resources for governments, employers, and workers helps build capacity in occupational safety and aligns with the broader goals of the SDGs.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION:
IRIOSH collaborates with universities, governments, NGOs, and international organizations to promote global health and advance knowledge in occupational safety and health (OSH).
Dr. Kathayat's previous partnerships include:
*Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) — Conducting comparative OSH policy research between North America and Southeast Asia, focusing on the OSH inspector ratio to enhance decent work environments.
*Columbia Southern University (CSU) - Exploring OSH leadership styles to predict employee safety performance and job satisfaction, contributing to improved workplace conditions.
*Canadian Common Ground Alliance (CCGA) — Presenting at conferences in Regina (2025) and Halifax (2026), Canada, to share insights on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to occupational safety.
*International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) — Conducting peer reviews of 25 abstracts for the 2026 World Congress in Munich, Germany, which will further our understanding of global health issues.
Industry and academic partners across Canada, the U.S., and Southeast Asia continue to collaborate with us in this essential research institute dedicated to promoting decent work and enhancing OSH practices.
IRIOSH was established with a simple but powerful belief: every worker, in every country, deserves safe, healthy, and dignified employment.
Dr. Arjun Kathayat founded the institute to address global disparities in occupational safety and health, strengthen evidence‑based policymaking, and support the United Nations’ vision for sustainable development.
With experience across academia, industry, and international research networks, Dr. Kathayat leads IRIOSH with a commitment to integrity, scientific excellence, and global collaboration.
IRIOSH exists to generate knowledge that protects people, empowers communities, and builds a safer, healthier, and more sustainable world.
Our Commitment to Free, Ethical, Non‑Predatory Knowledge Sharing
IRIOSH is dedicated to building a free, credible, and globally accessible platform where researchers can share their work without financial or institutional barriers. We recognize that fully established international organizations—such as the International Labour Organization (ILO)—are able to support fee‑free publishing because of their long‑standing infrastructure and extensive global funding.
As a newly emerging not-for-profit institute, IRIOSH is actively working toward achieving this same level of sustainability. Our goal is to provide completely fee‑free open‑access publishing by 2030.
Until we reach that milestone, and solely to maintain essential operational costs, IRIOSH has implemented a minimal open‑access fee of $50 per research article. This amount is intentionally kept as low as possible to ensure accessibility while supporting the basic infrastructure required to uphold academic quality, ethical review, and long‑term platform development.
IRIOSH remains firmly committed to expanding equitable access to knowledge and eliminating financial barriers for researchers worldwide.

IRIOSH is a non-profit research institute dedicated to promoting global occupational safety and health (OSH) research for the public good. Your support enables us to advance decent work and contribute to global health by: Conducting independent research, Publishing open-access findings, Building international partnerships, and Strengthening global workplace safety and social justice for all in alignment with the SDGs.
